When Life Refuses to Follow the Plan

One of the biggest myths in self-development is that successful people follow a perfect plan.

They do not.

They adapt. Badly, at first. Then a little better each time, until adapting simply becomes the plan.

This week has been another reminder that life has absolutely no respect for colour-coded calendars or carefully crafted to-do lists…..it doesn’t even glance at them on its way past.

The app is almost finished. The website has been pruned back and simplified. Links have been checked, pages merged images moved into proper folders, and a hundred tiny jobs have quietly disappeared into the background where nobody will ever notice them.

That is the strange thing about building anything worthwhile.

The closer you get to the finish line, the less dramatic the work becomes.

Nobody applauds when you fix a broken button….nobody throws a small parade when you rename a bookmark from “DMR” to “Dark Moon Radio.” Nobody notices when a privacy page quietly appears, or when the shop finally points in the right direction, as if it had been sensible all along.

Yet those tiny, unglamorous details are what separate something that feels unfinished from something people trust. Trust is built out of exactly the sort of jobs nobody thanks you for.

Meanwhile, real life has been unfolding around all of it entirely unimpressed by my task list.

My father has been struggling with his heart. The Community Emergency Team visited. Now we’re heading to the local A & E, because stubbornness — his, mostly, though I claim my share — eventually has to make way for common sense. He needs monitoring…none of us particularly wanted today to look like this. But sometimes the day chooses you instead, and you go along with it, because the alternative is worse.

Getting older must be one of the strangest journeys there is. There comes a point where your own body stops obeying and starts negotiating instead. Terms and conditions apply, and nobody remembers agreeing to them.

I watched enough this week to be reminded that strength isn’t pretending everything is fine. Sometimes strength is simply agreeing to let somebody help — which, for the stubborn among us, is the harder trick by far.

Oddly enough, the same lesson applies to building a business.

Dark Moon Rocks has never been about overnight success. It has always been about laying another brick….then another….then another, on the days when you would rather not.

Some days that brick is a radio show. Some days it’s a podcast. Some days it’s fixing a menu nobody will ever consciously notice. Some days it’s sitting beside your father in a hospital waiting room, doing nothing that looks like progress at all.

Progress doesn’t always look productive.

Sometimes progress simply looks like not giving up.

So the work continues, in whatever shape the day allows…. the app is almost ready. The podcasts are taking shape. The website feels lighter than it has for months. The first TikTok live edges a little closer.

And somewhere beyond all the polishng there’s a future version of this little project quietly waiting for me to catch up with it.

The moon reminds us that nothing stays full forever.

Nor does it stay dark forever.

The important thing is simply to keep turning.
