Canal Tao #05— The Living Mirror

This morning the canal is a great still mirror.

Clouds, trees and sky are all reflected so perfectly it looks more like a painting than a real place. For a moment, everything seems completely motionless.

Then the fish give themselves away.

Little rings appear on the surface, widening out through the reflected clouds, as if something secret is stirring underneath the muddy water.

And all around it, birdsong.

That is what makes it real.

Not the perfection of the reflection, but the small signs of life moving through it.

The Tao often looks like stillness from a distance.

People imagine stillness as emptiness, or passivity, or nothing happening at all.

But the canal this morning says otherwise.

Stillness can hold movement. Silence can hold song. A mirror can still be alive.

Sometimes the world is not asking us to do more.

Sometimes it is simply asking us to notice the life already moving beneath the surface.

Stillness is not the absence of life. It is life without noise.
