The pound rises and falls, and for now we\u2019ve been told to stay where we are, so that\u2019s what we\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But today three large hire boats came through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All three got stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost in exactly the same places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bottom of the canal is so close now that their engines churn the mud into the water, turning it pale and cloudy. A little more power gets them moving again, but every lock they pass through takes more water out of the pound, and not enough is coming back in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After watching the first boat struggle, I started warning the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slow down here. Keep your speed there. Don\u2019t stop. Keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They waved and carried on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I couldn\u2019t really blame them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re not foolish. They\u2019re on holiday. They\u2019ve got a boat to return and a route they thought would still be there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the canal doesn\u2019t know anything about itineraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u2019t know when your booking ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u2019t know how far you intended to travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It only knows how much water is in front of you now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be one of the harder lessons of the Tao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We make plans based on yesterday\u2019s conditions, then become frustrated when today refuses to cooperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you can push through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you need more momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you simply have to stop moving and wait for the water to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The way forward is not always the route you planned.
